An early C18th handwoven wool and linen cloth, found inside a quilt made at least a century later and used as unseen padding, carries centuries of anonymous domestic maintenance. A 1950s blue-and-white infant’s dress, torn and repurposed to patch the older cloth, carries the trace of mid-C20th care: the tending of a body within a household. White machine stitching marks the domestic tool of female labour applied in repair. Three temporal moments, three registers of female domestic work, none sufficient to the damage encountered. The cloth outlasted them all.
