Forever Changes #04, 2019
Forever Changes is a series of drawings made with a manual typewriter. The typewriter's mechanical processes are codified through a set of loose rules established in advance of making, and followed through to arrive at a completed work. Using predetermined parameters and repetitive actions is a way of upending more traditional compositional strategies and subjective decision-making to facilitate an exploration of the physical and material aspects of creative production.
Although operating within controls and parameters, the nature of the aged equipment and human actions on the equipment create the potential for accident and facilitates unpredictable results - probing the relationship between the mechanical and the human, and opening- up a conversation about the points of intersection between them.
In their self-conscious modesty and small scale the drawings celebrates intimacy and vulnerability, exploring the idea that a single mark can articulate and alter the understanding of the ground itself, an idea implicit in every day of lived experience.
