A cloth found on the inside of a quilt made at least a hundred years later, being used as unseen padding, carries with it centuries of anonymous domestic maintenance. A 1950s infant's blue-and-white homemade dress, now torn and repurposed to patch the older cloth, carries the trace of mid-twentieth-century care: the tending of a body within a household. White machine stitch carries the domestic tool of female labour applied in the act of repair. Three temporal moments, three registers of female domestic work, none of them sufficient to the damage they encountered. The cloth outlasted them all.
